Complete Photo Requirements for Indian Government Exam Portals

Every Indian government exam portal has its own photo and signature specifications. Getting these wrong, even by a few KB, causes your upload to be rejected. Often there is no clear error message. This guide covers every major recruitment and entrance exam with exact requirements so you upload correctly the first time.

Common Portal Errors and How to Fix Them

"File size exceeds maximum limit"

Your photo is larger than the allowed KB. Use the exam selector above to compress to the correct size. This is the most common portal error.

"Invalid file format"

This tool outputs JPG regardless of input format. If the portal rejects the file, ensure you're uploading the downloaded file and not the original PNG/WebP.

"Image dimensions not within allowed range"

This tool handles file size, not pixel dimensions. For dimension requirements (e.g., 200×230 pixels), resize the image first using any photo editor or your phone, then compress using this tool.

"File size too small"

Some portals set a minimum KB (e.g., 10KB). If your image is very small to begin with, compression may go below this floor. Use the homepage custom input to target a slightly higher KB value.

How to Use the Exam Selector Tool

  1. 1Select your exam from the dropdown at the top of this page. The KB target is set automatically.
  2. 2Upload your passport-size photo by clicking or dragging onto the upload zone.
  3. 3The tool compresses in your browser within 2–5 seconds. No server upload ever occurs.
  4. 4Download the compressed file. The filename includes the target KB for easy reference.
  5. 5Upload to the exam portal. For signatures, run the process separately.

Tips for a Good Passport Photo for Exam Portals

  • Background: Use a plain white or light grey background. Avoid patterned walls, shadows, or furniture in the frame.
  • Lighting: Natural light from a window facing you is ideal. Avoid harsh overhead lighting that creates shadows under the chin.
  • Expression: Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and forward-facing.
  • Framing: Face should occupy 70–80% of the frame. Include the top of your head and your chin.
  • Recency: Most portals require a photo taken within the last 3–6 months. Do not use an old photo even if it looks similar.

Note: Photo requirements change between recruitment cycles. Always verify the exact specifications in the official notification (advertisement) for your exam before uploading. This guide is based on commonly published requirements and may not reflect the latest cycle's changes.
